Faygo Cola. A Detroit Classic. |
We spoke to a relative of an employee of an advertising Firm in Detroit, who in the 1920's were the Ad Men/Company for the Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works/Faygo Beverages. (BETTER KNOWN AS THE MAKERS OF FAYGO POP!) I listened in amazement as I learned these alleged & interesting facts. Every kid in Detroit called their sugary nectar 'POP".
The story goes as follows: The Advertising employee recommended changing the name to FAYGO as it would be more marketable! This Employee soon toured the plant and through the machinery roar heard the "POP" noises made in the Plant. This is were the word "POP" comes from as an advertising tool. USFIREHOUSE.COM notes 1861 that the word 'Pop' is coined. HUTCHBOOK.COM mentions the word "Pop" comes from the late 1880's-1897. HUTCHBOOK.COM further states:
"Frederick Marryat, an Englishman who toured America during the 1830s wrote favorably in A Diary in America (London, 1839) of “the pleasantness, amenity, and variety of the potations.” While in New York for Independence Day in 1837, he was amazed to see the whole length of Broadway lined with booths “loaded with porter, ale, cider, mead, brandy, wine, ginger-beer, pop, soda-water, whisky, rum, punch, gin slings, cocktails, mint juleps, besides many other compounds, to name which nothing but the luxuriance of American English could invent a word." Drink: A Social History of America, Andrew Barr, 1999."
(THE GADFLY HIGHLIGHTED THE WORD 'POP' in RED)
The term 'Pop' was used interdependently as far back as the 1830's!
