I was fortunate enough to understand that growing up in a stable environment was paramount to being a healthy adult. But sometimes a child needs alittle help. THUS, GIRLS ON THE RUN (GOTR). One of several Organizations that help the self-esteem, self-worth, socialization and fitness level for a life-time of health and happiness for girls!
These volunteer Women are a marvel. Professional Women and more that give of their time to help girls feel better about themselves. According to their website, Coaches are specialty trained to assist girls on their journey to self-confidence. I know one coach personality and she is a wonderful Woman and a really caring person. I was attached to the Manchester, Michigan GIRLS ON THE RUN for both a practice 5k and a season-ending 5k where all of Southeastern Michigan GOTR Chapter met for a friendly competition!
The girls came from all "Walks of Life". Mostly working Moms...some Single Moms too. The socialization was effective for some of the shyer girls as one Coach told me. This program works
as a Coach told me as she saw the changes in one girl in particular from super-quiet to more outgoing by the season's end!
THE PRACTICE 5K:
A fun practice! I went around Manchester, Michigan with one of the Coaches who marked the run pattern with chalk and hand-made smalls signs with slogans of encouragement! THESE COACHES CARE! The girls ran and walked..always with a coach to each speed-level group. The girls were never without supervision.
THE SEASON-ENDING 5K:
An early morning run at the University of Michigan; Chapters from all over the Southeast parts of Michigan congregated at their flags before the 5k! Always a few serious runners, the first several were adults but after that the girls and their Coaches started to arrive. A great crowd cheered them at both at the Start Line and the Finish Line!
