"WRECK THE HALLS" 2021 CONCERT WAS A PUNKER'S PARADISE

The clean vibrant streets of Corktown was churning with the Saturday Nightlife. One solid Business was seemingly gleaming more this eve- For the dynamics of Punk Music, in all it's different forms was about to happen at the Old Building of PJ's Lager House.

DEAR DARKNESS plays at WRECK THE HALLS 2021

This 2-Roomed Bar & Concert Hall (that's all I saw at least) is best known as being a secret Drinking Joint disguised as a Furniture Store during Prohibition. Almost paradoxically the hidden treasure of unique Punk Music is found within the building's 1914 walls of this great Night Spot.

The Open Concert Room had a table on each side and swelled full during the Band Sets and emptied between as patrons catched a beverage or cigarette. The Concert Room was decked out in Christmas decorations. The Bar/Restaurant Room was very close and easily accessible for a breather and drink.

I got to speak to the Lead Singer of CULT OF SPACESKULL and the Drummer of DEAR DARKNESS. A great person- we spoke about the Preparation of her Events and about other local Bands & DJs. I Cosplayed JOHN McCLAIN of DIE HARD (1st Movie) as it was a Christmas Event. Her Band organized a great Halloween Event similar to this one at Small's- and I really enjoyed that Halloween Event! They mentioned to dress in your Finest Christmas Attire for this one...so I did! lol.

      Talking to The Lead Vocalist of CULT at WRECK THE HALLS 2021

This was another Show by the Creators of "Super Spooky Friday Before Halloween Battle To The Death" Punk Rock Show- I was looking forward to a Battle against Santa as advertised but I had to leave Early. Bummer! Check out The Cult of SpaceSkull facebook Page to see videos and Photos!

Now this Blogger left around 11pm and missed seeing 3 of the Bands. But what was seen was a nice span of Punk Rock.

The Bands I saw:

The Palace of Auburn Hills;
Girl Fight;
Sros Kings;
Wombworm &
Dear Darkness

THE PLACE OF AUBURN HILLS

Imagine a Punk Shoegaze Band fronted by Emily Haines of Metric. This felt like that! An incredible Band with drums and a guitar. The call of  a beautiful Siren gets you to listen and before one knows it their Set is over. I really enjoyed a nylon face-covered character I later found out was called "Mr. Mystic". He stood to Stage Left the whole Set...it made one uncomfortable or on-edge which is interesting. A unique add- I loved the feeling as it made me think!

              VIDEO: THE PALACE OF AUBURN HILLS

GIRL FIGHT

Punk Rock's Tribal beats rings true of Girl Fight. Kinda the equivalent of Tribal House music for the House Genre. This 2-piece is a talented duo with vocals and instrument experience. The guitar was outrageously awesome!

                       VIDEO: Girl Fight

Sros Lords

This would be what non-Punk Music Folks would probably call a classical "Punk Band" Hard Riffs, high-energy and the feel of being in the Big Machine and being tossed around.

                        VIDEO: Sros Lords

Wombworm

An interesting 4-piece and the Cocorosie of the Detroit Punk Scene. Great Voices and an Experimental feel about this Band. I liked the fact that all of the Band Members can sing.

                       VIDEO: WOMBWORM

Dear Darkness

My Favorite Band of the night with bouncy-catchy lyrics and songs about life in general. This Band is almost a smaller version of the Lunachicks as the vocalist sounds very similar to Theo Kogan. I loved this Band!

                     VIDEO: DEAR DARKNESS

Sorry to say I had to leave early. The Cult of Spaceskull I assume was one of the organizers and had a great Skit-themed Halloween Show at Small's in Hamtramck. This Event's theme was a battle against Santa... according to THE CULT OF SPACESKULL'S Facebook page, the Lead Singer of CULT (The Red Queen), was "Killed" by Santa and an Elf.

CULT OF THE SPACE SKULL Halloween Show DAZZLES- Skits, Choreographed duels and Costumed Characters!

When I see a "Battle of the Bands" I think it's just one band that is perhaps chosen as a Winner out of a slew of competitors. Little did I know the Bands at Small's Bar SUPER SPOOKY FRIDAY BEFORE HALLOWEEN BATTLE TO THE DEATH!! Event would literally be choreographed fights and such! I was awed and very happy- it was VERY ENTERTAINING!- the music was AWESOME!

Detroit's Punk scene continues to be a locally-centered scene around smaller bars such as Small's in Hamtramck. Since the late 1970's, Detroit's size and non-centered Night-life has necessitated this approach. Like the sirens of Bands like Negative Approach, the Bands at this performance- Cult of the SPACESKULL, Burn Maralaro, SNARLY and Steve Harvey Oswald continues the Punk-essence that can never die in the Motor City.

    VIDEO: CHICKEN DINOSAUR attack during SNARLY'S performance!

Besides solid music from all the Bands, the theme of a challenge between Headliner CULT OF THE SPACESKULL and BURN MARALAGO to see who is DETROIT'S TOP BLOOD CULT pervaded the night. SNARLY is an Ally of CULT OF THE SPACESKULL. During SNARLY'S set, Clown-themed MARALARO taunted them. Second-to-last MARALAGO was slowly replaced by CULT on stage in a chorograph "Coup". MARALARO 'S hilarious response of "wtf" was great.

                           VIDEO: BURN MARALAGO's "You First!"

Audience-area guests such as a GIANT CHICKEN DINOSAUR (SNARLY fought it); ROBOT that searched for the remnants of the MARALAGO BAND; SPACE SKULL (a Skeletal Demon similar to Slender Man); a GIANT SCOOBY-DOO (During MARALARO set); a HUGE GHOST blow-up Effigy (During CULT's set- it represented the Ghosts of MARALARO) and those 2 Clown Lackeys of MARALAGO were constantly supporting their Band!

The Album Release of CULT's first Studio album, "That's What You Get" is a Punk view of the world with the opening song, "Future"'s opening line- "I've been to the future and it fucking sucks..."- a solid album! One can say this was the ULTIMATE ALBUM RELEASE PARTY!

The final battle between The Leader of MARALAGO and THE RED WITCH (Leader of CULT) was epic! CULT won this "Battle" and is the "PRIEMIER BLOOD CULT OF DETROIT"

VIDEO: STU SATRUN ON THE GUITAR

I was the Photographer for BANG UP TAPE JOB- a fabulous Rock Band from the greater-Saginaw area. We did a pre-set photo-shoot involving a nice car and the baseball field fence. Also a nice ground-level shot of the whole Band.

                                     VIDEO: MOTORDEAD JAMMING

                                 VIDEO: THE MIDNIGHT HOURS BAND

I was present during the Representative of the U.S Marine Corps spoke. He also arranged a fly-over of a Rescue Helicopter (all volunteer) at no cost to the Tax-payer! He mentioned the local TOYS FOR TOTS Program too. Always a great cause!

Also a County Judge, Joseph Toia spoke of the wonders the Court System in the County created to help those needing Drug & Alcohol abuse help. It is working for Addicts. The Judge gave rave reviews to LIVE RITE as they are one of the Agencies he sends these recovering Souls to.

I stayed and saw most of the Bands. There was great music and the Event went smoothly. The mix of Heavy Metal to soft Rock/Folk was an indicator of the great thought put into inviting all different types of music- just like the greater Roseville area.
