The Medival Times & Now: Michigan's Great Renaissance Festival

Sam Gurwin (Gadfly Investigations Newspaper, 9-24-16)

From live entertainment to throwing tomatoes at medieval townspeople, the MICHIGAN RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL has something foe everyone...even if your not into Cosplay or Medieval History!

I visited at least 6 live acts including singing, juggling, instrumental music and comedy! They were captivating and you didn't want to leave but you knew other shows were going on. And of course the main attraction...the JOUSTING! The act was great with sword-fighting and intrigue. The stands were packed as it is known it is a cool event!

The food lines were alittle long (as we remembered) but the FAMOUS HUGE MEAT DRUMSTICKS WERE THERE! Also alot of vendors- T-shirts, jewelry, weapons and more!

It's a fun walk around the property with so many Vendors! T-shirts, Arts & Crafts, rides for the kids, and more. Definitely worth the admission price. You could throw axes & other martial arts weapons. Even SHOOT A BOW & ARROW! How often do you do it in real life?

The perfect festival: Ferndale Pride's fun & uplifting message defines Detroit

Sam Gurwin, Gadfly Investigations Newspaper (8-10-16)
Just when you thought the warm weather would was the beginning of the Detroit Festival Season- think again!

VIDEO: Telephon9 LIVE!

The musical season may start with the Electronic Music Festival at Hart Plaza but the sirens call of fun touring of beautiful downtown Ferndale along with food, vendors and magic of good vibs really begins with the Ferndale Pride Festival.

Eastside Derby Girls rock! I love talking to them
Set in supporting gender equality and transgender rights, this festival began in 2011 and hasn't stopped growing in popularity. From about 15,000 visitors to this street fair, it is a place one can feel comfortable in whatever role they feel themselves to be.

Telephon9 live- a great Detroit Pop Band!

Warrior Dash: a dash of fun with 3 miles of obstacles!

Sam Gurwin (Gadfly Investigations Newspaper, 8-7-16) The Rain had stopped. The gathering of men & women at the E.A. Cummings Center in Mt. Morris were there to conquer WARRIOR DASH, a 5k race designed with water obstacles, several climbing obstacles, several trench/trench-like barriers and related obstacles- even crossing a small river and such!

From seriously clad runners in spandex to costumed Warriors, it was a fun event no matter your level of skill. The people were all very nice and the spirit of hanging out & enjoying late Summer was in the air.

THE EVENT SEQUENCE:

Parking was pretty much ok other than no one assisted in forming the parking places- hopefully some people didn't get stuck! The place was pretty packed but the long walk to the "Warrior Dash" area was worth it. From young to old, the atmosphere of light competition and fun were present. There was a bag drop for all of your valuables. SO YOU WERE LIGHT & FANCY-FREE to run this cool event.

You could mill around b4 or after the race- there was a DJ, Food, activities like "tug-of-war" and vendors for outdoorsy equipment. You could take your picture with your friend in front of  'Warrior Dash' stands and such. A few costumed figures including I think the Official Warrior Dash Cos-play representative were amongst the crowd!

OUR VIDEO OF THE WARRIOR DASH!

You get in line right before your assigned time to run and are released under a huge banner with fire coming from the top! (See Video above). Then alone or running among your friends and other dashers, the race was on! It was more fun then competition; several people were walking at certain points including this blog's representative!  From climbing walls to walking planks over water pits, fun & skill merged! One long stretch after small river crossing was marred by a muddy climb were one had to grab onto small trees and fallen ones to move (at least this blogger did!)

THE 5K!:

The race was moderate-to-hard for the blog. We had to stop several times after running. Also after a few obstacles. Swimming in a small swamp/lake to a platform was the coolest part of the race. The platform had a roped area within a square- one had to get through the area to the other side of the platform (it was submerged)!

THE GARAGE Gym from Garden City, MI! CHECK THEM OUT!

Another cool part was at the end...the fire pit...you had to jump over it! A huge slide where you had to climb up the back of it to slide down ended the race! Most went right to the shower area to get all of the mud off after. Groups from 1 to 20 or so ran this 5K-like a cool fitness business called "The Garage" from Garden City, Michigan!  A nice group of people. Check out their Gym in Garden City, Michigan!
