LOCAL TRAVELING GROCER COMPANY, 100 YEARS IN BUSINESS, TELLS THEIR VIEWS ON DETROIT

June 15th, 2013 (Reporter: Sam Gurwin)

For years I have watched Joe Lucido, Operator of "The Green Grocer of Fine Foods" carry boxes of fresh Fruit and Vegetables into my building. The quality and almost TV-commercial quality of the Food was just amazing. What is the secret of his success & high quality of his products? I must find out as I munched on one of his perfectly ripe Bananas!

I discovered Joe's Company has been in business over 100 years! Joe's Grandfather, Guiseppe Lucido, started the business from his push-cart. He later started selling his products from a Model-T! Joe's Dad, Anthony Lucido, continued the tradition of selling fresh produce to an expanded area including the Suburbs of Detroit.

As I walked out to Joe's Delivery Truck, I interviewed him about his thoughts on Detroit and his unique view of it from behind his Truck's wheel.

I asked him about THE EASTERN MARKET. "It's a Gem", he says. The Eastern Market, A State sanctioned Historical  site, has been around since 1841 (Wikipedia), accessed 6-14-13). Joe does his buying there and in the City of Detroit. The Market is a delight to many People this reporter has spoken to over the years. From Flowers to Livestock, this place has it all!

HOW CAN THE CITY OF DETROIT COMEBACK? "The City needs good People in leadership". "They are having financial problems" says Joe. The right People can fix it. I have heard that from this also from alot of People I come in contact with in my daily life. Joe mentions "The right People" should be running Detroit. Who are these mysterious Heroes and Heroines that can save us? THE GAYFLY INVESTIGATIONS NEWSPAPER (our Facebook page)will continue to inquire into this issue.

From his few deliveries in the Palmer Woods and the Sherwood area in Detroit, most of his business is now in the Suburbs. It use to not be that way. Like another business I highlighted at THE_GADFLY (Instagram), Greene's Hamburgers. The cycle is business loss from the City-Proper to the Suburbs. Joe has a Farmer's Market he attends in Grosse Pointe all the time. Like all Detroiters, Joe Lucido's heart is for a better and prosperous Detroit.

especially the central downtown area and its adjoining neighborhoods - Midtown, New Center, Woodbridge, Lafayette Park, Corktown, and the Riverfront. The new residents represent a diverse demographic group: professionals, retired empty nesters, hipsters, students, and the creative class. Mostly, they are members of the curious and adventurous middle class."  (Karen DeCoster, "From Rust to Riches" Blog, article- "Detroit's White Flight in Reverse", 2-22-13, accessed 6-15-13)

The articles out there are becoming more positive. Aaron Betsky's great Blog mentions,

" Detroit has become our modern-day Pompeii, reminding us not just of the beauties of past civilizations, but of our own mortality.  Detroit is becoming a beautiful skeleton holding a mirror up to us so as to reveal our inner makings (Architect Magazine, "Detroit's Comeback: A realist Possibility?", accessed 6-15-13). Art and the People who create can help to revitalize the City. Betsky's perspective is honest on the problems and perhaps an Art revival can help this troubled City.

I talked to Joe again recently. He will be sending me some pictures of his Father running the business! Sorry to say there are no pictures of his Grandfather pertaining to the Grocer business.

We will keep you updated on Joe's adventures in the Metro-Detroit area!
