REAL & FUN COLLIDE: COMIC CON DETROIT (2015) was like a Futuristic New World!

The first ever Comic Con took place in 1970 in San Diego, California, with only three hundred people in attendance. Today, Comic Conventions exist around the world with more than three hundred people making up just the line to get in!

Attracting more than just fans of comic books but also Movies, Video Games, and TV shows, the popularity of these conventions has escalated immensely. Thousands of people flock to these conventions to celebrate their shared interests, show off their costumes, and meet the famous creators, writers, and actors of their favorite material.

Vendors sell comic books, props, collectibles, and anything else true fans want to buy, and it's also a great place for independent artists to showcase their creations and sell their work.

I had never been to a Comic Con before and so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The only thing I knew was that there would be many people there and many of them in costume. I figured that there would be lines to get in, but I had not anticipated the extent of these lines.

Before even reaching the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, there was a two mile long line of cars patiently waiting, and slowly moving, to get to the location. Surprisingly, there was no line at the ticket sales, but the line to actually get in was out the door and snaked around half of the building.

Looking at all the people dressed in costume, however, helped make the waiting time go by fairly quickly.

Standing in line or walking around the convention, the fans in costume are one of the biggest attractions to these events. From the super detailed oriented, to just a couple of identifying props, seeing people dressed as your favorite characters is both exciting and fun.

There was no limit to what people dressed up as. Both young and old fans were around showing off their outfits. It only took a simple “excuse me” before they were posing to get their picture taken.

Everyone in costume was more than happy to take a picture, and for some people, circles formed around them so everybody who wanted to could get a clear shot. For characters like Predator, Darth Vader, and Groot, their picture lines seemed longer than some of the famous actors there.

The movie and television actors were another big attraction, and if you bought the VIP package you got to meet them, get their autograph, and even take pictures with them. For most of the actors, however, you'd have to wait in a long line to greet them, but it would be worth it for the ultimate fan.

Half of the cast of AMC's The Walking Dead was there; Lou Ferrigno, the original Hulk; Ralph Macchio, the Karate Kid; Tom Kenny, the voice of Spongebob; and many others all had booths setup to meet fans.

Although I didn't get to meet or get autographs from the actors it was really exciting to be so close to the people that actually played the characters that everyone loves.

The closest I got to someone famous was actually on my way out. A security guard walking behind me kept saying, “excuse me, excuse me” and I was quite puzzled as to why he would be telling me to move instead of going around, but when I stepped to the side I saw a big hulking man behind him and recognized Lou Ferrigno!

They were moving at a quick pace and before I could even comprehend what happened they were gone, but I still find the experience exciting!

One of the main reason anyone goes to Comic Con is for the comics, and there were an insane amount of comics. Different sections and different booths held vendors selling all sorts of comic stories.

It would take you all day to sift through all of the comics being sold. If I had a million dollars I think I could go crazy buying up various comics, from the most recognizable series to one's I had never even heard of.

Comic Con is the place to be for true comic fans and there is so much to offer. Dressing up yourself or seeing others dressed up, meeting actors, reading comics, buying art, checking out collectibles and props, and that's not to mention the specific events that were held on each day.

They hold costume contests, video game tournaments, and discussion panels to name a few. I'm really glad that I had the opportunity to go, and I'm already making plans to go again in the future.
