The Detroit
river is a magical stretch of water that separates our lovely state from the
friendly foreign country of Canada! The river has been around for as long as
Detroit has and doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, especially in
this weather. Trying to pick the least coldest day among a stretch of the most
coldest days this year, was a little tricky, but I did land on a nice day that
flirted sunshine yet still spat snow in my face. Unlike every resident who had
the smart idea to stay away from the Riverfront, I took the task of walking it.
Despite the freezing winds from the river and the constant stream of snow, the
Detroit River Walk still makes for a good afternoon getaway no matter the
weather.
The city of
Detroit can be overwhelming if you're unfamiliar with the tall buildings and
one way streets, but there is so much to love around every corner. My journey
started out at a snow covered Hart Plaza, with very few trails where foot
traffic past through. Some of the events that take place in the plaza, in the
summer, are the Detroit Electronic Music festival, Jazz festival, Rock &
Roll festival, and Motor City Pride festival just to name a few. This empty
plaza was a complete contrast from the crowds that gather during the warm
weather and summer events. Passing the iconic, yet desolate, Dodge & Son
memorial fountain, I made my way toward the waterfront where a Canadian skyline
greeted me through the snow smeared sky. So close and yet so far, it sings to
you through the wind and its buildings beckon you to visit.

The Gateway
to Freedom International memorial statue stands to mark an important part of
Detroit history at the edge of Hart Plaza. This memorial seeks to remind us of
Detroit's important role in helping runaway slaves through the underground
railroad all those many years ago. The Detroit Princess river boat is hard to
miss with its hulking size and growling motors. Even the Princess has to stay
warm in her icy bath. When she does make it out on the river in the summer
she's open for parties and events and can hold a large number of people for any
occasion. There's not many places now the Princess can go with the river half
frozen. The ice sheets on the river over-lap each other in most places and
create aesthetically interesting designs. If I were more daring I'd think about
trying to walk out on it, but I'm not sure anything would make me trust that
river ice.
Further
down the river walk, past the Detroit Princess, you start to hear the rumble
and screeching sound of metal ringing from above. Tall columns support the
overhead rail system famously known as “the People Mover”. The metal car makes
no subtleties when passing by as you approach the Joe Louis arena. With plans
to demolish and rebuild the arena, it wont be long before the Joe becomes
another memory like that of Tiger Stadium and the Silver Dome. Until then, we
can enjoy the iconic home of the Red Wings as it sits by the river, casting
it's glory to the Canadians across the way. Canadians may be known for their
skills at Hockey but we're always ready for a challenge, and we're not afraid
to show it!

The Joe
Louis Arena was my last stop in that direction on the river walk, so I doubled
back and kept walking the other way. The other direction down the river front
is more open but is almost immediately towered over by the GM Renaissance
Building. If anyone knows anything about Detroit they're probably familiar with
one of the most iconic buildings, the GM Renaissance Center. Brooding over the
river front, it's hard to not marvel at the sheer height of the buildings, and
I was not the only one there in awe. A small group of foreign travelers were
bundled up in front of the building posing and taking photos. So although there
are no fountains running or any music festivals playing, the river walk is
still a good adventure for anybody looking to spend a nice afternoon. If you're
able to embrace the cold and can't wait until the summer, go have an adventure
on the Detroit River-front today!
