REMEMBER WHEN MOVIES WERE MADE IN MICHIGAN? OUR MOVIE CONTACT DOES!

She runs an organization by day but works in the movie industry 'At Night' as they say!

INTERVIEW WITH JEFF DANIELS (2009)- Great talk of the possibility of jobs and good works...THE GADFLY supported the failed Movie-industry incentive project in MICHIGAN. This video has a great breakdown of the lost potential! 32 movies were shot in 2008. 3000 jobs were created in 2008 according to CNN. THE GADFLY'S contacts on the periphery of the industry could have benefited.

We had a short interview with someone that has been on the professional side of the Movie Industry for years. We met this great Lady about 6 months ago and have been talking about the Film Industry, Ferndale, Michigan and her interesting past. We will be writing a story on her soon! She had just returned from the Mid-West were she was apart of a 'Thiller/Action' Movie shooting! We are looking forward to finding our more about this.

Our experienced Movie Industry Contact was willing to talk about 2 of movies she worked on including :

(1) RED DAWN (2009 production started). She has pictures from the set which I am trying to get for THE GADFLY! They used real weapons for the movie but they used blanks (fake bullets) for the scenes.

J. Dean Morgan and Chris Hemsworth in "RED DAWN" (2012).  Photo courtesy: in.com

(2) REAL STEEL (2010 production started). I was saddened by the loss of funding of movies in Michigan and mentioned this movies...she said, "I WORKED ON THAT". I was pleasantly surprised! We will talk to her more to see if she had any conversations with Hugh Jackman or Dakota Goyo! The GADFLY is here for you!

So more later on Michigan Movies, Movies-in-general and other interesting Michigan facts from her.

Thanks for taking a look at our picture & the YouTube video! Stay tuned for an interview with the MOVIE PROFESSIONAL and other movie-related stories!

DETROIT HISTORY OF ACCEPTANCE LIVES- FERNDALE PRIDE 2013

The Detroit-Area has always been home to a great diversity of People. In 2010, The City was 83% African-American. Immigrants from many countries came to the area, We thrive on the diversity and are use to it. Trends continue. Our Community is a unique in acceptance of many groups of people including the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

OUR VIDEO ADVENTURE AT THE 2013 PRIDE FESTIVAL!

For 3 years, the City of Ferndale, Michigan has had a festival of community pride called "FERNDALE PRIDE". A family fun event in early June of this year, they estimate from 10,000 to 15,000 attend it. They have a 5k run/walk to support diversity and anti-bullying as a bad concept; morally and legally.

Local Business tents. Community support was great!   #gadflyin
The group of great citizens lead by former Ferndale Mayor Craig Covey mentioned frustrating issues setting it up this year. THE GADFLY thanks Mr. Covey and his team for sticking with this important Festival. We actually talked to him at this event. He mentioned (this was before he officially ran again for Mayor) he was interested in again perhaps going into politics. We are sorry he didn't win his lasted run for Mayor. Mr. Covey and several other people continue to bring the event to Ferndale.
“We are a proud city,” said event organizer and former Ferndale Mayor Craig Covey, “and we are proud of the volunteers and businesses owners and residents who continue to make Ferndale a beacon for acceptance, inclusion, and diversity in our state.”  PRESS RELEASE

Great Detroit-based merchandise at the Ferndale Pride.  #gadflyin

The main Sponsor, Motorcity Casino, seems to do a great job. The 75 booths were sold out with an estimated 15,000 people attending according to the organization's press release. The music was great. THE GADFLY is definitely going to do a bigger scale article next year on this event.

The event raised $15,000 that went to local charities! The amount was up 40%. Business space rental was up 15%, Mr. Covey reports.

We will take more pictures and video next year. :)

Thanks for stopping by our blog!! Stay tuned for more great stories! :)

Preview of Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo

Last night I worked a volunteer shift at Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo - AWESOME!  I was lucky that I got to see some of what there is to see at this event before and after my shift.  I'll be volunteering again, but will also go one night so I can thoroughly enjoy this magnificent event and take more pictures to share with you.  Here is a little preview of what I saw.

I worked in the Otter House.
Otter House Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo

They had carolers, who were very good.

Of course there were LOTS of lights.

Needless to say the lights were probably the 'star' of the show.

Love the Lego made iconic Detroit Zoo water tower.

DETROIT'S Limo industry: Elegance to Common Place

A night on the Town! Getting dressed up and hitting a restaurant and a show. 'Old school' you say? We'll your right!

One of our Limo Company Contacts, an experienced fleet owner for many years in DETROIT, has noticed:

1. Decline in couples going out for dinner and a show.
2. Increase in 'Party Bus' use.  Trend of partying with big groups of people. A party bus is a modified bus that people can stand in and socialized while in motion.
3. Change in culture to more group-type activities which increases requests for the 'Party Bus'.

THE GADFLY thinks with technology, i.e. instant communications and gratification, society has become this way by virtue of habit. People don't filter themselves online and this translates to RL or real life as they say on the internet!

Well It is Michigan and Baby it's Cold Outside

As a rule, man is a fool
When it's hot, he wants it cool
When it's cool, he wants it hot
Always wanting what is not.
Anonymous
Last night I came up with 3 new designs that I put on sweatshirts.  They are kind of in response to 'Why Michigan?' - particularly in the winter.  I got this idea when someone I know, who had  moved to Florida from Michigan was posting on Facebook about the cold weather.  It also brought back memories of people questioning my decision to move to Michigan.  The constant, 'Why Michigan?', 'Why not somewhere warm?'  These 3 designs are my response to 'Why Michigan?'
WHY MICHIGAN? BECAUSE...

When at Bronner's it is Wise to Look Up

Bronner's is such a BIG store ('The world's biggest Christmas store'), that you couldn't do it justice with just one blog post.  If you go there you'll find yourself overwhelmed by all the merchandise to look at, but don't forget to look up.  The store has such great decorations all over the store to look at, and you'll miss so much if you don't look up.  Here is a sampling of what you'll see:

As you walk in there is a beautiful "Welcome' designed to look like a weather house.

Jasmin was pleased with the Parade in Detroit this year. The Parade Company is the entity that runs it. She has been with this great organization for 8 years and this the first time it has snowed during it during her tenure.

It was sticking to the ground. The weather was chilly this year.
She was all smiles while talking with us.
See you all next year

BEAUTY,BRAINS & BRAWN: WOMEN'S ROLLER DERBY POPULARITY ROLLS ON- DETROIT'S STORY

This reporter couldn't believe his eyes. HOUR Magazine had an article during the Summer of 2013 that listed Roller Derby as one of the 101 things every Detroiter should do (Number #15). Duh. THE GADFLY already knew that!

VIDEO RECOLLECTIONS OF THE GADFLY'S BOUT REPORT

THE GADFLY has been covering this fun and intense sport since the Summer of 2012. A notable history, Women's Roller Derby had gone from purely entertainment in the 1970's to a highly professional amateur sport being considered for the Olympic Games in 2020.

There are several leagues in the Detroit-area. One of them is the Detroit Derby Girls. They are the big leagues in Women's Roller Derby. These Athletes 'bout', a term for their matches at the historical Detroit Masonic Temple. Our friendly Parking Attendant, Migel, noted the Derby Girls have been around for 10 years and have been at the Masonic for 2 years. The Masonic had several events going on including a Wedding! We didn't know it was available to the public in such a way!

Thunder Kiss of the Devil Night Dames. We both talked to her teammate, Careen-the-Dream, injured and at the Hospital.    #gadflyin

Since Reporters Kim and me are Licensed Private Investigators, we are excited to see what differences there are compared to other Leagues we have seen in action. We took some great pictures of the building's Architecture before we head up to the 7th floor when the bouts are.

Detroit Masonic Temple- Lobby Secondary Room   #gadflyin

Detroit Masonic Temple- Outside view      #gadflyin

Detroit Masonic Temple- main Entrance Room   #gadflyin

The 2 Bouts we saw were great. The Devil Nights Dames vs. The Pistolwhippers (Whippers won) and the Detroit Pistoffs vs. The D-Funk Allstars (D-Funk won). We were upset our favorite team, THe DAMES, lost as our good friend Careem-the-Dream is a member! Darn we say!

We met Wham!tramack, Elle Mcfearsome and Cookie Rumble at the entrance to the Masonic. They were nice enough to speak to us about Detroit Derby. They said the half-time show was going to be great (AND IT WAS!).
Wham!tramack, Elle McFearsome and Cookie Rumble. Derby is 'Family Fun' they say!   #gadflyin
The Girls mentioned Detroit Derby is a good family fun night in Detroit. WHY SHOULD I GO TO DERBY? I ASKED. Detroit had alot of other things to do too. We left the Girls to get our press pass and talk to the Media Relations people. The lobby was amazing and we were amazed they were playing on the 7th floor! This building is huge. We proceeded to go see our Bouts and met one of the 3 Paramedics on site. He mentioned the Detroit Derby Girls are up to code and State Law with the medical help they need for the Bouts.

A Unnamed D-Funk Allstar Athelete in action!    #gadflyin
The skill level was high for all of the parts of a Derby matches. We analyzed it the following way:

  1. Jammers- Fast and we saw no issues with teamwork
  2. Blocking- Amazing blockages and organization
  3. Sportsmanship- Clean with a minimum of penalties
  4. Injuries- There were 3 to our knowledge; 2 were broken legs. League sources and our source said everyone was okay!
We spoke to our friend Careen-the-Dream about her broken leg. She is fine and we hope to see her at the next Bout- on the bench or in the stands!

WE TOOK PICTURES AND VIDEO FROM ALL AROUND THE ARENA. We found everyone liked the bouts and were having a great time.

  • THE BAND- 'Sick Smile' was great at the Half-times for the Bouts. They play a 'Hard' Alternative Rock which was perfect for the matches.
CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO OF 'SICK SMILE'
  • THE ACTION- The Bouts were great but the D-Funk/Pistoff bout was just a fight of titan vs. titan. Amazing all-around in Offense and Defense.
ACTION VID. -JAMMER CRASHES THROUGH DEFENSE
  • DERBY GIRL INC.- We talked to the Graphic Designer behind the Detroit Derby Girls products table. They have a great assortment of stuff.  Hoodies and shirts and so much more, oh my! The Girls spoke of the Corporation having Committees and deciding of issues through this structure. They are a business, you know.
DETROIT DERBY GIRLS have a great product line.....everyone wins!         #gadflyin
Great Entertainment- Sword-balancing, Hula-Hoop & More!

  • SUPERFAN!

                          SUPERFAN- DERBY IS EXCITING!

We met alot of great people including our SUPERFAN! He was awesome. As you can see with fans, even not as fanatic as "SUPERFAN", Derby is going strong. We talked to people who mentioned the girls spend around $800.00 a season. The tickets, the bars and restaurants, and other support business benefit from the matches. Women's Roller Derby is being considered for the 2020 Olympics! We have our fingers crossed for sure!

The Girls give to charity at every Bout. We noticed all of the teams, no matter what league does this! They are really kind & Compassionate people. They collected food at this Double-Header!

We turned in our Press Pass and left but the memory of the great matches still lingered in our heads. We will definitely  be going back!

Thanks for taking a look at our pictures & video! Stay tuned for more great pictures and stories!

Will You Have Cider on Your Thanksgiving Table?

Franklin Cider Mill

Today The Gadfly Investigations Newspaper was #Gadflyin at The Franklin Cider Mill located at7450 Franklin Rd Bloomfield Hills, MI.  They press and bottle their cider right there on the premises; however due to space you can not tour that area and watch the process.
Franklin Cider Mill

I picked up some cider for Thanksgiving and also some Northern Spy Apples (I think these apples make the best pies) to bake an apple pie (Spies 4 Pies).  Love the ambiance of The Franklin Cider Mill.
Rouge River Franklin Cider Mill

Here is an interesting fact about the mill:  the mill was completed in 1837, the same year Michigan became a state.
Michigan Apples at Franklin Cider Mill

I admit I was disappointed as I wanted to get a 'Cider Dog', but they only have them on the weekends :^(  and this weekend is the last weekend they will be open.  Maybe I'll make a quick stop over on Saturday or Sunday.
An interesting cider fact:  the average yield is approximately 3 gallons of cider per bushel of apples.
Head over to our Pinterest boards and see more pics of the fun and delicious - Franklin Cider Mill.   http://www.pinterest.com/pisamindad
