Today The Gadfly Investigations Newspaper was #Gadflyin at The Franklin Cider Mill located at7450 Franklin Rd Bloomfield Hills, MI.  They press and bottle their cider right there on the premises; however due to space you can not tour that area and watch the process.

I picked up some cider for Thanksgiving and also some Northern Spy Apples (I think these apples make the best pies) to bake an apple pie (Spies 4 Pies).  Love the ambiance of The Franklin Cider Mill.

Here is an interesting fact about the mill:  the mill was completed in 1837, the same year Michigan became a state.

I admit I was disappointed as I wanted to get a 'Cider Dog', but they only have them on the weekends :^(  and this weekend is the last weekend they will be open.  Maybe I'll make a quick stop over on Saturday or Sunday.  
An interesting cider fact:  the average yield is approximately 3 gallons of cider per bushel of apples.

Thanksgiving is Almost Here and The Parade Company is Ready

I have been attending Stagecrafter shows at the Baldwin Theatre since I moved here from NY.  While it may not be "Broadway", I have rarely been disappointed.  The productions and talent is first rate.  Sunday the theatre had an open house to celebrate their being designated a local historic site.

   Fun afternoon with refreshments, show tunes on the Wurlitzer organ and a tour of the theatre.  Here are some facts I learned about the Baldwin Theatre:

1. Built in 1922 for $125,000
2. Featured silent films and vaudeville acts
3. Older than the Fox and Fisher Theatres
4. In 1984 the theatre was closed and demolition was considered
5. Stagecrafters purchased it in 1984 for $70,000
6. Members did most of the renovations and the theatre reopened 09/20/1985 with The Music Man
7. Baldwin Theatre Alumni - Sutton Foster, Jeffrey Seller and Kristen Bell

'SICK SMILE' ROCKS The Detroit Masonic Temple-Detroit Derby Girls Double-Header Band- Nov. 16th, 2013

THE GADFLY had the pleasure of meeting the Band 'SICK SMILE'. Ken and his Band were available to fill a need yesterday for the DETROIT DERBY GIRLS Band for the night as the scheduled Band couldn't make it.

Since Summer of 2012 they have been rocking Michigan with their blend of Hardcore and Alternative Rock. As I sat down with Ken and his friend, I could tell they have the talent and knowledge to get to the top of the industry. Ken grew up in the halls of the Masonic Temple in Detroit as one of his family members was a Mason. He tells me of secret passages and fun stuff like that! The GADFLY may try to get a tour soon!

Thanksgiving is coming and you know what that means - America's Thanksgiving Parade.  Thanks to The Parade Company of Detroit, Michigan this is a great parade.  PI Sam and I took the tour that they offer at The Parade Company - it was a lot of fun and very interesting.  The Gadfly Investigations Newspaper will blog more about this soon, but for now here is a little quiz for you.  Can you name who these famous people are?

ROLLER DERBY in OZ- WOW!...Eastside Derby Girls duel in "YELLOW BRICK ROLLED"

Yet again Investigator Kim and Sam transcend onto the tuft of the coolest chicks this side of Roseville, Michigan. ROLLER DERBY. This is the season to see great athletes compete in a up-and-coming sport! This was a scrimmage between two teams made up of several teams including some Canadian ones!

 The match was a scrimmage organized by the EASTSIDE DERBY GIRLS (EDG)with several other teams, including men who were mostly Referees. We talked to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) who was a volunteer for the EDG. At least 2 times there were some Athletes who left the rink to recuperate from a game stopping minor injury. We talked to the EMT at the end of the bout and everyone is okay!

The teams were the Lollipop Guild in Blue and the Lullaby League in Pink. They were both strong teams. One of the better bouts THE GADFLY has seen!

We talked to 2 "Fresh meat" players. This a term for new people who either passed the minimum qualifications and can play or is still being okayed to play. The girls have to pass a 2-prong test

We talked to the "Owner" of the Club, 'Kitty'. She was so nice to talk to the Gadfly. She loves Detroit Derby and says DETROIT is the "Godfather of Derby"!

We met the Annoncer and had a great conversation with him. he is going to be with the EDGs for the season. A life-long Detroiter, he loves it but as many people is disappointed with the bankruptcy.

The Eastside Derby Girls support Charities during there season. The one they are currently helping "PLAYWORKS". They help through workshops and advocacy at schools to strengthen kids intellect and happiness through play.

Everyone we talked to were excited the ROLLER DERBY MAY BE IN THE UPCOMING OLYMPICS! We found out that the problem is the lack of male leagues for it. We shall see..and cross our fingers!

THE OLDEST MILITARY DEPARTMENT IN THE US- THE COAST GUARD....The Detroit Belle Isle Station

THE GADFLY took a tour of the Coast Guard Station this summer in Detroit. We toured it with one of their Law Enforcement Officers and had a great time. We toured their boat docking area, dining room, meeting room, weigh room, and most of the rest of the Base.

According to the Boating Safety Resource Center, the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD assists ships carrying cargo (due to ice blockage problems) during winter carrying about 200,000 tons of cargo on the Detroit River. These ships can continue on their journey due to the assistance of the Coast Guard!

It was great talking to our Tour Guide, an experienced Law Enforcement Officer. He loves Detroit and like several other Soldiers we talked to- are new to snow! Our guide looks forward to more snow this year!

They train year round including ice rescues without notice to the teams. They have a pond in Belle Isle park that they use! Their personnel includes different ages and both men and women.

They do work in conjunction with their Canadian counterparts in an emergency.

THEY MAKE INTOXICATING ELIXIRS BEHIND THE DOORS- What is DEVIL'S JUICE? ZOMBIE KILLER? The Make MEAD....B. NEKTAR MEADERY!! (PART 1)

Our visit to the B. NEKTAR MEADERY was probably one of the best trips for the GADFLY INVESTIGATIONS NEWSPAPER. Charateristics of a great story is

The Taproom we visited has the hipster quality of a New York City loft. In the light industrial area of Fashionable Ferndale, Michigan. This building also serves as 1 of 2 production plants for the up-and-coming Mead Company. Visit their website 

The company started out of one of the Owners making a Mead for a friend that was getting married. On the tour of the Plant, Ein, one of the Owners, told us this great story. Mead... in legend, if given to the bride to the point of intoxication, a male child will be born! And from there it was history. As said early, they are now the 3rd largest Mead producer in the United States. And Ein told use they will be making BEER shortly!

When we arrived we got free "Blow Off' which is the extra Mead from a batch. It defiantly whetted our drinking appetite for more!  We tried:

1. Zombie Killer- Very good. Cherries, honey and apple Cider; a "gateway" drink to the Mead World! Carbonated for our drinking pleasure!
2. Kill all of the Golfers- A great medium-type Mead with hints of Beer flavor.
3. Necromangocon- Mango juice, Honey and Black pepper- Really good and a nice light warmth in the back of the throat well after drinking this delicious concoction! carbonated so it is smooth. They got the idea from the "Evil Dead" movies. I wanted to try it for it's 'Dungeons & Dragons" sound and I heard the story of its name genesis! 

We talked to some customers who love the place. Everyone was having a great time. They played PANDORA RADIO with a view of what was playing on the wall!

They have 15 employees and have the policy of looking for people who are looking for a place in life. they are really nice and unique people at B. Nektar Meadery. Memorable quotes:

A Bit of the Blarney on Woodward in Berkley

The Blarney Stone Pub

Yes, I know PI Sam posted about The Blarney Stone in Berkley, including a nice video, but I am going to give you a little of my view and review the pizza - as it is my pizza quest.

I loved The Blarney Stone nice atmosphere, great service (our waitress was super), and good food.  Oh and they have 28 beers on tap.  We ordered wings and peperoni pizza.  The wings were fabulous.  The pizza was cheesy (love when you pull off a piece and the cheese just stretches), but the crust was thicker than I like.  The pizza was good 4 out of 5, but the wings were like a 6 out of 5  :^)  I also ordered a beer, did I mention they have 28 beers on tap.  I told the waitress to bring a Michigan beer and she brought me a Frankenmuth Oktoberfest - yum.

Definitely will be making a return trip here.  I hope the next time the Detroit Dog Rescue will be there, so I can get a T-shirt and I think I will get a Blarney Stone T-shirt.  Yes, T-shirts are something I collect and why not they are fun, comfortable and practical.
