The arena first opened in 1923 as a field house and in 1973 was transitioned to an ice arena. It underwent renovations in 2012-13. The arena is named in honor of Fielding H Yost. Mr Yost was a legendary football coach and athletic director at theUniversity of Michigan.

The arena is home to the U of Mhockey team, along with the men's and women's club hockey and figure skating teams.

I can only imagine the energy in that building when theU of Mhockey team takes the ice, maybe one day I will get to see a game there.
It is Friday and it is Lent, so that means it is time for FISH FRY - Yum!!!!
St Marys Royal Oak Michigan
I was #Gadflyin at St Marys in Royal Oak and what a deal: fried or baked fish, salad, cole slaw, roll, mac n cheese, fries or baked potato - all for $9.50 ($7.50 for seniors, $5.50 for kids.) Did I say it was all you can eat?

They also had all kinds of desserts for which they only asked for a donation towards the 8th Grade Washington trip. The food was good, it was packed and everyone was happy and full. If you like fish there are 3 more Fridays in Lent.
Detroit Rock legends, Frijid Pink, played at the New Way Bar in Ferndale and didn't disappoint. A solid performance by Brent Austin, Rick Houke, Rick Stevers, Rick Zeithaml and Chuck Magnus. They were fun and witty on stage- good time had by all. The GADFLY noted Rick Zeithaml really feels the music as he played his guitar, eyes closed for the in-depth portions of songs. The man can sure play!
(Frijid Pink plays 'Drivin' Blues@ The New Way Bar- Ferndale MI) New Way Bar, a hip live music Bar near the epi-center of the Club Scene in Fabulous Ferndale, Michigan,-it's not the biggest Club/Bar but its one of the friendliest we found! The staff was great and cared about the customer. They have live Music 4 nights a week including an 'Open Mic Night'.

(Chuck Mangus & Rick Zeithaml of 'Frijid Pink') The Band were super nice and we took pictures and chatted with them. Real 'Salt of the Earth' guys. We hope to see them again but they don't know when their next concert date is.

Can't believe it has already been a week since Frenchie Skate, I had such a great time. The performances were awesome and it was nice to get to meet the skaters after the show ( thank you all for posing so patiently for pictures). Dancing with the Stars starts tonight with Meryl Davis and Charlie White competing against each other and in little more than a week the World Championships will start.
But right now I just want to remember the great time I had at Frenchie Skate and all the highlights:

Jason Brown is a YouTube sensation with over 4 million views of his Riverdance, yet he remains humble and soooo nice. What a great guy and friend to fly to Michigan to help out his friend Georgia Glastris.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when I heard that The Shibutanis would be at Frenchie Skate 2014 and that Michael Buckley would be the emcee. I was NOT disappointed. It was great to meet them and to be able to tell them that I admire their work. They inspire me to continue to work on my skills and try to create content that people will find entertaining, educational and interesting.

I want to thank Georgia Glastris for putting together Frenchie Skate 2014. It was an great show for a great cause, and what a wonderful tribute to her friend: Francesca Frenchie Persico.

Michael Buckley (Buck Hollywood) emceed and did a terrific job. From his entrance onto the ice, (yes he skated and he looked like he was no stranger to the ice, gliding out and about effortlessly) to his knowledgeable and humorous intros. There was plenty of skating and a nice mix of skating levels. I now have some skaters who I didn't know before, but will be watching in the future. The 'piece de resistance' was the meet and greet afterwards, getting to talk to the skaters and getting some nice pics. These skaters are not only great athletes, but they were all so nice.and personable. I love Figure Skating - it is a beautiful sport and I applaud the skaters who participated in Frenchie Skate 2014 they are caring individuals who donated their time and talent to a good cause and to help out their friend Georgia Glastris.

Very excited to go to Frenchie Skate 2014 tomorrow, and it got me thinking back to Skate America in October and the beginning of the Skating Season. Competitions are always exciting and it was great to see Meryl Davis and Charlie White debut Scheherazade.

In addition to Davis and White, I got to see a lot of great skaters including;
Tatiana VOLOSOZHAR / Stanislav MOROZOV (Pairs Olympic Gold Medalists)
Additionally, it was great to be at 'The Joe' (Joe Louis Arena) to see a skating competition right here in Detroit Michigan. Detroit hosted Skate America previously in 1995, 1997 and 1998. And of course Detroit hosted the US Nationals in 1994, which will forever be remembered for 'Tonya and Nancy'.

Visitors had great things to say about Detroit - how friendly and nice people were, and how well the competition was run. Hopefully we'll see more skating competitions here in the future - it is only fitting since so many skaters train in the area. Hope to see you all at Frenchie Skate tomorrow.
The Gadfly caught up with Ice Skater and Regional Champion, Alissandra Arnow. She is a Figure Skater. She lives every little girl's dream! Paired with Collin Brubaker in senior ice dancing, she just finished her season in 8th place in Boston for Nationals. She hopes for a higher ranking next year. She, like alot of highly skilled Figure Skaters love the sport and look forward to the Olympics in their future. Her season begins again in August but she will be performing at FRENCHIE SKATE 2014, a charity ice-skating event in Ann Arbor to raise Money for Northstar Reach, a camp dedicated to free activities for Kids with serious health issues like Cancer.

Alissandra Arnow, US Figure Skating Competitor
Alissandra knew at age 4 she wanted to skate. Seeing her Mother skate set her on a great path! She now competes regularly in US Figure Skating Championships. In 2013 she and her partner won the Mid-Western Sectional Champions! Check them out here! She admires and looks up to the Olympic competitors including Gold Medalist Charlie White and Meryl Davis. We plan on seeing Alissandra on Sunday at FRENCHIE SKATE 2014! We pretty much have clearance to go back stage to get a great story on this cool event! Stay tuned! I grew up in the Metro-NY area, a very diverse place, but I had never heard of a Paczki until I moved to the Metro-Detroit area. For those of you who don't know this is a Paczki:

Gurwin and I got out #Gadflyin early to get ours. Maybe next year we will trek to Hamtramck to get our Paczkis, but this year we got them at The Donut Cutter in Berkley. They were fresh out of the oven and the trays just kept coming - big demand forPaczkis today.

There is plenty of parking located next to the restaurant, the prices are more than reasonable and they have a senior menu after 4PM. They do accept all credit cards; however they charge 4% for using the card - (this IS printed on the menu and the waitress did advise me before I paid).

We met Alex on the side of Interstate-696 (east-bound) near Telegraph Road. A Member of the MotorCity Gumball Rally LLC, he wanted to make sure everyone was okay. We called the Police and a few hours before they pulled the people out of the Car.
I passed 2 accidents on the way. The snow wasn't as bad as the snows earlier this season, but it was 3 inches and slippery.
He had his "Rally Car' lights going- flashers like the Police have but amber in color.. He was checking on an overturned Black SUV on the side of the road. THE GADFLY stopped to help. As I had my Mag-Lite flashlight out, checking the tinted windows, Alex mentioned he couldn't pass as his "Conscience wouldn't let him" pass by.
Their rally is August 23 & 24th..the end isn't announced but they will goto Chicago during the Rally. Their Facebook mentioned this Club is car-enthusiast club with the goal of having fun and enjoying their cool cars.
